X

void_oceania immerses you within a vast, living digital ocean that wraps around the room, flowing across the walls into an infinite horizon. This synthetic sea responds directly to your presence, it’s tides, waves, and sounds shifting with your breath, movement, and warmth.

This real-time ocean functions as a digital twin of the artist's ancestral shoreline in Humåtak, Guåhan. Recreated from memory, X creates a living portrait of the ocean in the midst of rapidly changing environmental and political conditions.

By grounding itself in a fragile ecosystem, the work actively confronts the forces of erasure that threaten both physical shorelines and cultural histories. It deconstructs the gallery space to examine how deep memory survives under conditions of ecological and existential uncertainty. void_oceania uses the spirit of the Pasifika as a living connective tissue, the installation as a vessel to examine the 'void' of diaspora: the deep ache of absence and separation from one's homeland.

In void_oceania, your presence becomes a form of navigation. Every movement leaves a trace, joining human rhythm with the Pacific's tides to close the distance of displacement. A vessel designed for diasporic people to navigate memory, and find their way back ‘home’.

VOID_OCEANIA

an interview with the artist

X is a multidisciplinary artist whose large-scale, site-specific installations and environments investigate the intersections of spatial politics, deep time, and speculative technology. Converging emerging digital architectures with physical installations, X reconfigures the built environment into a series of living systems. Their work confronts the architectures of erasure, deconstructing space to examine how memory and embodied experience manifest under conditions of ecological and existential precarity.

Advancing concepts of algorithmic sovereignty through the lens of a Coushatta and CHamoru worldview, X’s practice challenges the institutional decoupling of technology from the natural world. Synthesizing a dual background in Architecture (MArch, USC) and Art and Technology (MFA, SAIC), X develops a material language that replaces static colonial structures with fluid, biotic architectures. Functioning as both a conceptual intervention and a technical feat, this work has been exhibited globally—including at Ars Electronica, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Field Museum, and the Autry Museum—engineering resilient spatial narratives that bridge deep-time systems with speculative, tech-mediated landscapes.
